ℹ️ About This Calculator

Air terminals must move the design airflow without excessive velocity, which causes noise and draughts. This calculator returns the required free area and an equivalent square or round neck for a supply diffuser or return grille from your airflow and target face velocity, and flags the likely noise level.

Face velocity is the key trade-off: too low and the terminal is oversized and costly; too high and it whistles. Typical targets are 2-4 m/s for supply diffusers and 1.5-3 m/s for return grilles. The tool divides airflow by velocity to get free area, then applies the free-area ratio (usually 80-90%) to give the physical neck size.

🧮 Worked Example

Example: A supply diffuser handles 200 L/s (0.2 m³/s) at a target face velocity of 2.5 m/s. Free area A = 0.2 / 2.5 = 0.08 m². With a 90% free-area ratio the neck area is 0.089 m², giving a 298 mm square or 336 mm round neck. At 2.5 m/s the terminal sits in the quiet-to-moderate NC band, suitable for offices and classrooms.

What face velocity should I use for a supply diffuser? +
For occupied spaces, 2-4 m/s at the diffuser face is typical. Stay near the lower end (2-2.5 m/s) for quiet spaces such as bedrooms, offices and libraries, and allow up to 4 m/s in noisier areas like workshops or corridors.
How do I size a return air grille? +
Return grilles run at a lower face velocity than supply diffusers - about 1.5-3 m/s - because they lack throw requirements and noise is the main limit. Divide the return airflow by the target velocity, then apply the grille free-area ratio to get the neck size.
What is the free area ratio of a diffuser? +
It is the fraction of the terminal's face that is actually open to airflow, after deducting bars, blades and frame. It is typically 0.8-0.9 for grilles and diffusers. The physical neck must be larger than the pure free area to compensate.
How is diffuser noise (NC) related to velocity? +
Noise rises steeply with face velocity. Below about 2.5 m/s most diffusers stay under NC 25 (quiet); 2.5-4 m/s gives NC 25-35 (acceptable for general spaces); above 4 m/s they become audibly noisy. Sizing for the right velocity is the simplest way to control terminal noise.
Can I use this for both round and square diffusers? +
Yes. The calculator gives both an equivalent square side and an equivalent round neck diameter for the same free area, so you can match whichever diffuser shape your ceiling layout requires.
