ℹ️ About This Calculator
The NBC Plumbing Calculator determines minimum sanitary fixture counts, water demand, and drainage requirements for buildings in India per NBC 2016 Part 9 (Plumbing Services, Drainage, Sanitation). The National Building Code specifies the minimum number of WCs, urinals, and wash basins for each occupancy type and occupant count — essential for building plan approval.
NBC 2016 Part 9 (Plumbing Services) is the mandatory reference for all building plan submissions in India. It covers water supply design, drainage, fixtures, materials, and installation requirements. Local municipal bodies (BBMP, MCGM, HMDA, BDA, etc.) reference NBC 2016 for building plan approvals. Rainwater harvesting: NBC 2016 mandates RWH for buildings over 300 m² plot in most states. Water recycling: grey water recycling systems for large commercial buildings.
📐 NBC 2016 Part 9 – Fixture Requirements
NBC 2016 Part 9
Occupancy-based Fixture Schedule (NBC 2016 Table 3): Office/Commercial (per occupant): 1 WC per 25 persons (male); 1 WC per 15 (female) 1 urinal per 25 males; 1 wash basin per 15 persons Educational (per student): 1 WC per 50 boys; 1 WC per 25 girls 1 urinal per 25 boys Assembly/Cinema (per seat): 1 WC per 100 males; 1 WC per 50 females 1 urinal per 65 males; 1 wash basin per 75 persons Water Demand: Office: 45 L/person/day; Hospital: 450 L/bed/day Residential: 135–180 L/person/day
🧮 Worked Example
Example: A commercial office plans for 200 occupants split evenly (100 male / 100 female). For males: 100/25 = 4 WCs and 4 urinals; for females: 100/15 ≈ 6.7, rounded up to 7 WCs. Wash basins: 200/15 ≈ 13.3, rounded up to 14 basins split across both toilet blocks.
Daily water demand at the office norm of 45 L/person/day: 200 × 45 = 9,000 L/day (9 KL/day), which sets the sizing of the domestic water storage tank and feeds directly into the drainage discharge unit calculation for the building's soil stacks.
