About This Calculator

The tilt angle of a fixed solar array sets how much of the year the panels face the sun squarely. This calculator gives the optimal year-round tilt from your latitude, along with summer and winter angles and the direction the array should face.

A fixed tilt roughly equal to the site latitude maximises annual energy; a slightly shallower angle (the Landau optimum) squeezes out a little more over the year. Steepening the panels in winter and flattening them in summer follows the sun’s changing elevation and is worthwhile for seasonally-adjustable mounts. Panels should face the equator — due south in the northern hemisphere, due north in the southern.

Year-round optimum (Landau): tilt = latitude × 0.76 + 3.1° for latitude ≥ 25°, or latitude × 0.87 for latitude < 25°.  Seasonal: summer = latitude − 15°, winter = latitude + 15°.

Worked Example

At latitude 28.6° (Delhi) the optimal year-round tilt is about 24.8° facing due south; drop to ~13.6° in summer and raise to ~43.6° in winter to follow the sun.

Enter your latitude and the calculator returns the year-round optimal tilt using the Landau relationship, plus the summer and winter angles (latitude ∓ 15°) for seasonally-adjustable mounts, and the direction the array should face based on your hemisphere. All angles are measured from horizontal.

Design Notes

  • Fixed rooftop arrays: use the year-round optimal angle, or match the roof pitch if it is close.
  • Ground mounts you can adjust: change tilt two to four times a year toward the seasonal angles.
  • Very high latitudes: cap winter tilt near 60–70° to limit wind load and self-shading.

What is the best tilt angle for solar panels? +
For maximum annual output a fixed array should be tilted at roughly the site latitude. A slightly shallower angle (latitude × 0.76 + 3.1° for latitudes above 25°) gives the true year-round optimum used in this calculator.
Should solar panel tilt equal latitude? +
Setting tilt equal to latitude is a good, simple rule and is close to optimal. Fine-tuning to a slightly lower angle raises annual yield a little because more energy is available in summer when the sun is high.
How do I adjust panel tilt for summer and winter? +
Flatten the panels by about 15° below latitude in summer (the sun is high) and steepen them by about 15° above latitude in winter (the sun is low). Adjustable mounts that are reset a few times a year capture most of this benefit.
Which direction should solar panels face? +
Panels should face the equator: due south (azimuth 180°) in the northern hemisphere and due north (azimuth 0°) in the southern hemisphere, which keeps them pointed at the sun through the middle of the day.
Does tilt angle matter more than direction? +
Orientation usually matters most — a large east/west deviation costs more energy than a moderate tilt error. Getting the array facing the equator first, then setting a near-latitude tilt, captures the great majority of the available energy.
