About This Calculator

kVA is apparent power and kW is real (usable) power; the power factor links them. This calculator converts kVA to kW (or kW to kVA) using your power factor, and also returns reactive power and the full-load current.

Real power (kW) does the useful work; apparent power (kVA) is what the supply and cabling must actually carry. The ratio of the two is the power factor. Because generators, transformers and UPS units are rated in kVA, converting a kW load to kVA (dividing by power factor) is essential when sizing equipment — a 0.8 PF load needs 25% more kVA than its kW figure.

Worked Example

Why It Matters

  • Size generators, transformers and UPS units on kVA, since that is how they are rated.

How do you convert kVA to kW? +
Multiply the apparent power in kVA by the power factor: kW = kVA × PF. For example 100 kVA at a power factor of 0.8 gives 80 kW of real power.
Is kVA bigger than kW? +
kVA is always greater than or equal to kW. They are equal only at a power factor of 1.0 (a purely resistive load); at any lower power factor the kVA figure is larger because it includes reactive power.
What is power factor? +
Power factor is the ratio of real power (kW) to apparent power (kVA), between 0 and 1. It represents how effectively the current is converted into useful work; motors and other inductive loads typically run at 0.8–0.9.
How many kW is 1 kVA? +
It depends on power factor: 1 kVA equals the power factor in kW. At 0.8 PF, 1 kVA = 0.8 kW; at unity power factor, 1 kVA = 1 kW.
How do you convert kVA to amps? +
For three phase, I = kVA × 1000 / (√3 × V); for single phase, I = kVA × 1000 / V. For example 100 kVA at 415 V three-phase draws about 139 A.
